5th Grade Expectations

Welcome Back

How to prepare your child for 5th grade:

Expectations:

    • Keep in mind- We are preparing them for Middle School!
    • 30 minutes of reading every night 
    • Zearn Lessons in class
    • Connect to Class Dojo
  • Basic Clean & Organizational Skills
  • Communication - Folders MUST be checked EVERY DAY

Basic Personal Information:

Please make sure your child is knowledgeable about the following:

  • Phone Number:
      • Parent’s Phone Number
      • Their own Cell Phone Number if they have one
      • Grandparent or Aunt or Close Friend’s Phone Number
      • Their own Home Phone Number
  • Address
    • Please make sure your child knows their neighborhood and what blocks their house is near or local stores that could be used as a benchmark

HOMEWORK

Homework will be assigned Monday-Thursday.  It will also be posted on Google classroom. If your child is absent, they must do their best to complete the assignments.   

Part of the homework is to read every night. Please make sure your child is reading a book they are interested in.

Math:

Number sense 

  • Place value from millions to thousandths (prior knowledge of whole number place value ones to millions)  
  • Multiplication and Division of large numbers both whole and with decimals. (prior knowledge of multiplication tables 1-12)
  • Comparing numbers ( >, <, =) 
  • Word form, expanded form and unit form

Fractions:

  • Addition and Subtraction 
  • Multiplication and Division
  • (Prior knowledge of equivalent fractions, Mixed numbers and improper fractions and simplifying or reducing)
  • Decimal/Fraction relationship
  • Comparing Fractions ( >, < =)

Word Problems

  •      Students will use C.U.B.E.S to be able to approach and solve word problems.  

ELA:

  • Current benchmark reading level is S.  By the end of the year the goal is for it to be a V
  • Reading Fiction and Non-Fiction 
  • Genre awareness
  • Providing text evidence (quotations, page and page #)
  • Annotating text when reading (reading with a pencil)

Writing:

  • Complete sentences (restating)
  • Clear print or script
  • Basic grammar and punctuation (noun, verb, adjective, adverb)
  • Informational, Narrative, and Opinion pieces

  • Edmentum (this will replace IREADY and is in the process of being set up for the school
