Welcome to Kindergarten!

Morning Routines

*A very big part of Kindergarten is routines and fostering independence.

*Students are responsible for unpacking their schoolbag, putting their folder in the appropriate place, putting away their lunch/snack and hanging up their coat.

Uniforms

- Uniforms (khaki pants, skirt or shorts with navy blue top)
must be worn Monday - Thursday.

- Sneakers should be worn on gym days.

- Friday is a dress down day.

- On gym days, students can wear P.S. 52 shorts or sweatpants and a solid navy shirt.

Bathroom

- We are fortunate to have a bathroom in each Kindergarten classroom. All children must be able to use the bathroom on their own.

Change of Clothes

- In the event of an accident or spill, we keep a change of clothing in the classroom.

- Please send in a complete change of clothes in a labeled ziploc bag.

- The ziploc bag should contain pants, a shirt, underwear and socks.

- Your child must be able to change themselves.

Breakfast

- Free breakfast is served daily in the school cafeteria, starting at 7:40.  Please make sure your child eats breakfast daily.

Lunch

- Children can bring a lunch from home or get lunch in the cafeteria.

- The lunch menu is available on the Department of Education website.

Snack

- Each child should bring a snack and drink daily.

-Please keep the snack in a separate bag from their lunch.

-Please label your child's snack with their name and

  the word "snack".

- No candy. No glass bottles.

Birthday Celebrations

- We can celebrate your child's birthday with a small in class.

- We cannot send home goody bags with food or candy in them.

- Parents are allowed to attend.  No siblings are allowed to attend.

Medical

- Please inform your child's teacher and the school nurse if your child has an allergy or medical condition.

-Absent notes must be handed in when your child returns to school.

Discipline:

1.Green means your child had a fabulous day. Everyone begins each new day on
green.

2.Yellow is a warning. It means something went wrong.  However, your child can go
back to green after correcting the issue.

3.Red means your child was unable to correct the issues that took place in class that
day. He/She will be spoken to regarding the behavior and contact with parent will follow.

***Please remind your child of good behavior every day.

****Behavior Calendar:

Your child will color in an entry on a calendar to show you his/her
behavior for each day. You need to sign each day’s entry. It is VERY important that you discuss his/her behavior, good or bad, each day in order to help make our classroom a positive environment. This calendar returns to school each day in your child’s Homework
Folder.

Dojo

We will be using Class Dojo to communicate with you. On class story, we will post important reminders to the entire class, as well as post pictures of the class. We will also communicate privately with you through Dojo.

Curriculum

Eureka Math is the program that we use at PS 52.

Zearn.org can be used to review numbers to 20. Your child will receive log in information from that soon.

Wit and Wisdom

- Students will focus on a skill and strategy each week.

- Some strategies that we will focus on are sequencing story
events, story elements

(character, setting, problem, solution), making inferences,
asking questions and using picture clues.

Orton-Gillingham (OG)

- teaches letters and sounds

- teaches proper letter formation

Dismissal

- Dismissal is at 2:14.  *Come a few minutes early.

-All children are dismissed through exit 10 (closest to the park).

- Please do not be late picking up your child, especially during the first few weeks of school when they may be more anxious.

- If there is a change in dismissal, please send a note in your child's folder. We need this in writing.

Homework

- Homework is assigned weekly. It is handed out on Monday for the entire week.

- Children should read every night. You can get books free from the library. We will also be doing "Book In A Bag" as the year goes on.

- Please check your child's folder each night.
